![]() It can be challenging to become accustomed to the controls as multiple buttons and combinations are needed to open each menu, as there are a few different menus to become familiar with in order to keep operations running smoothly. ![]() That is just a collection of garbage that space creatures leave all over the Spacebase and recycling that into the very energy you need to run your space station. Your first scenario is all about one thing earning energy through recycling. My Favorite is GARWIN because it sounds like a robot on autotune! With the update that went out in the second week of March there are now 3 voice options for “VAL”: GARWIN, ROBOT, or VAL. The AI 'VAL' does her best to guide you through the levels, but not without throwing a bit of salt in wounds quite humorously when you have made an interesting decision. VAL is your narrator and guide throughout the game, and she is never too far to explain what the scenario is before you start and react to the choices you make, often with sarcastic witty insults because to her you are just a carbon-based life form with basic brain capacity. Examples such as the recycling station that will give you the option of possibly a 50% increase of recycling and the results that it might have on your visitors, or 100% increase in productivity but it might make your spacebase messier due to leaky Telgrade visitors. Throughout each level you get asked about different service upgrades that might improve the ability of each. Within the levels you encounter different scenarios that you must navigate through to complete each level. Your job is to take command of a Starbase for all races to have access to basic needs like food showers, medical, energy, fun, and nature. Your job is to maintain the decks and expand into further ones as you make life sustainable on the ship. It appears that the station was abandoned because of too many alien enemies trying to take over the space station. You become the commander of an abandoned space station because you are the only humanoid with enough brain capacity to take control of the station. Only all the other races did not have the tech needed in order to win, so there was a meeting of the different species to come to a mutual agreement for happiness. It all began with telgorians giving a flower offering that was taken as a sign of war. This game is a base building management simulator where you are the 'Command-R' of an old abandoned space station, guided by the Dynamic narrator AI “VAL” who does not really tell you any information of what you need to do, only criticizes your actions and tells you when an event is taking place on your space station. We’ll continue to cover Spacebase Startopia as it reaches full release later in 2021.Hello Meat sacks! Welcome to my review of Starbase Startopia from developers Realmforge, best known as the creators of Dungeons 3. With all that being said, if you have any interest in base-building, RTS, economy sims, etc, then it is certainly worth jumping on the Game Preview via Xbox Series X|S. With the game being due out in Spring 2021, there is plenty of time for the developers to iron out the minor issues with controls and UI elements, with the biggest problem being the early onboarding. Spacebase Startopia generally has a nice look and feel, and it did suck me in, despite telling myself that I only wanted to test the waters during the beta/preview phase of development. It was easier to play on the PC than it was using the controller on the Xbox Series S, but I honestly think that is to be expected. That being said, the UI could still use some work and could some of the more fiddly controls. That being said, when I got over my initial confusion the game started to take shape well and I enjoyed balancing my economy, expanding my base and then taking on some of the RTS skirmishes. Yes, I know this is different, but it did throw me. The thing that confused me initially was the camera controls, they don’t quite match with what I expected coming from Cities Skylines, Per Aspera and the likes. I think I replayed tutorials a couple of times to really get a grip. The onboarding for a newcomer was slightly the wrong side of the imaginary line between being insulting and being a bit too confusing. Firstly it took me an age to get to grips with it. I have two schools of thought with the game. What you have with Spacebase Startopia is a base-building economical RTS mixture set in space within a Spacebase. You can see influences from both the mentioned games in here too. Spacebase Startopia comes from Kalypso Media of Tropico fame, developed by Realmforge Studios who made the Dungeons series. I was lucky enough to try it on both Steam and Xbox Game Preview on the Series S. A game that has intrigued me, since coming across it on Twitter. Just a quick write up on my time with the beta version of Spacebase Startopia. ![]()
